Up to a point, we feel that this ideal state of constant bliss is just within our reach. But some misery from the world, or some inner grief, always comes to shake up our mind, destroying even the vague comprehension of bliss, which we had gained from the study of the scriptures.
How then can a devotee practice his devotion when he is distressed by bereavement, when he suffers loss of wealth, when he is shorn of name and fame? The cardinal attitude of heroism in our Hindu philosophy is: “Refuse to weep; keep smiling.”
Then even the sorrow that reaches us gets ashamed and retires in its incompetency to make us suffer. It has then to go away; it cannot stay with such a heroic heart. There are very many things in life which you and I may plan, but they may happen differently.
