QnA With Swamiji – Results of Unpleasant Actions

Can I reverse the unpleasant results of wrong actions in the past?

Remember, whatever is coming from the past cannot be averted, because once it is set into motion, like the arrow that has left the bow, or the bullet that has been discharged from the gun, it cannot be recalled; its effects can, however, be softened or mitigated.

For example, the bullet fired from the gun is already on its way to you, but if you are agile enough, you can rearrange yourself such that you end up taking the bullet in your arm or leg, rather than in your heart, and can thereby save yourself.

Alternatively, you can face the bullet with a bulletproof vest (assuming you were expecting to be shot), so that even though you feel the impact of the hit as nature takes its course, you are actually unscathed. Life always throws up situations – the result of our past actions – which we refer to as destiny. The crucial issue is how we respond to it.

First and foremost, the moment we realise we are in charge and the maker of our own destiny, we appreciate that we alone are responsible for our joy and happiness. Some people are able to find happiness in the worst of circumstances; others seem to be miserable even in the best of situations.

To be cheerful or dejected is entirely in our hands; we can laugh over a sickness or we can cry over it; we can smile away a huge financial setback, seeing it as a wholesale opportunity to start afresh, or we can allow ourselves to slip into depression and bitterness towards life and the world around us.
