To bring water to the thirsty and arid land and creatures of South India, Sage Agastya with the blessings of Lord Brahma, obtained water in his kamandalu from Lord Shiva and travel far and wide in the south in search of a suitable place but wasn’t satisfied with any. He finally reached Kodagu (Coorg) and rested as the drought was growing intense.
Lord Ganesha decided to help the sage in finding the perfect spot for the river. The wise Lord took the form of a crow and toppled Agastya’s kamandalu. Water began pouring out steadily, the river grew wider and wider while Agastya who had woken up watched aghast. Furious at the crow he was about to curse him when the crow vanished and Lord Ganesha appeared there.
The sage bowed down gratefully realizing the wisdom of Ganesha for the dry land had been completely transformed by the full-fledged River Cauvery with Ganesha’s grace, thus helping the sage in realizing his mission. There couldn’t have been a more perfect place for River Cauvery to originate from.
