Legends from the Puranas tell us that Goddess Parvati created Lord Ganesha from turmeric paste by breathing life into it. Accepting the little boy as her dear son, she asked him to guard the house while she went for a bath. Soon, Lord Shiva returned from a journey and asked to be let in. Ganesha staunchly refused for he strongly stood by the value of loyalty. A fight ensued between the father and son at the end of which Ganesha was beheaded.
