Glorious Sanskrit – Om Saha navavatu

Om Saha navavatu saha nau bhunaktu
saha viryam karvavahai,
tejasvinavadhitamastu ma vidvisavahai
om santih santih santih

Om. May the Lord protect us. May He nourish us. May we energetically work together. May our studies be brilliant. May we never have hatred for each other. Om. May there be peace.

This popular invocation and peace-verse gives us an idea of the team spirit in which the Teacher and the taught approached the sacred duty of teaching and learning.

In Brahmavidya, no progress is possible without the active co-operation of the Teacher and equally sincere co-operation of the taught. Hence, the special prayer, ‘May we never quarrel with each other.’ Each day the Teacher and the pupil started and ended their lessons chanting this stanza of peace. Even today whenever the Sruti is taught, this practice is strictly followed.
