Dr Kshama Metre, National Director of CORD has been the guiding light of the institution since many decades. Amongst the many recent awards that CORD has received, The Guardian International Development Achievement Award is one such accolade from The Guardian, UK for her outstanding leadership and the excellent work CORD does empowering the poorest communities of India.
In all of this work, she believes in taking the lead from the local people she meets. “It was the people who decided their needs were wide-ranging,” she said. “You have to look at a person and what they need and work from there.” So how will this award help Cord? Dr Kshama hopes it will encourage those who work, or want to work, with her. Many volunteers come from across India, and the world, to learn from Cord’s work. “We are open to anyone who wants to learn,” she said.
